Wow, this is really awesome! TO the contrary, I think the shading is quite good. I love all the little details you can find, can't wait to see this in color!

First of all, I like the portrait, the idea is very good and the composition as good as they come. The scan however is in very poor condition, and very low-res, also I can detect some flaws in the technique, as you've obfuscated a less than perfect talent for lines with a little too much 'sketch' to it. I would love to see this in ink, with a greater contrast to it. Overall I believe 'tis a good work. I can't compare it to your previous works though, since I haven't seen them, I'll get back to you if I see it relevant.

I likes it! The shading is grand [workin' on me adjectives.] A lil more contrast might help make it more visible, but maybe it's just the scan.

Which pencil did you use & was it kept sharp?
The shading isn't bad, it's good for not having much experience. Keep working on it, you've got talent and ideas, you just need experience, with some experience you'll be great.
Just how great?
That depends on you, on how far you're willing to push yourself & how many high quality drawings you do. You don't have to make large complex drawings to do that, just practice on shading, textures, detaling. Different lines work differently and use that to your benefit.
You can see I like this, since it's gotten me typing all this stuff you might not want to hear.
This one requires higher contrast and smooth shading, with strong fluid lines.
Get some tracing paper, and trace it on to it and practice. Try different types of paper to draw on, the one you feel most comfortable with and one you feel most uncomfortable with (get em both and draw on them). Try pencils of different hardness and softness, see which ones you like working with. anyway, better shut up now
Good work, keep practicing and you'll get better.
